How long does an architectural project typically last?

Convert a 1 storey house to double storey with 3 compartments on the top (2 bedrooms with open plan kitchen)
I have a plot and I want to have a 3 bedroom flat L plan with a garage on the left hand side. It must have 1 and half bathrooms. Kitchen and lounge must be open plan. Plot is quite big so i want to start with L-plan in corner of the plot and then at a later stage add a double storey house.
